Dogon Granary Door from Mali – 38.2

Main Description

A distinctive Dogon granary door from the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali. Traditionally, doors such as this protected the small, window-like opening into a family’s grain store and were secured with a simple sliding lock.

The richly carved surface features primordial beings, ancestors, Kanaga masks, sun lizards and scenes of daily life. According to tradition, these carved figures served to protect the entrance and make it sacrosanct.

Now presented as a sculptural decorative piece, the door retains the depth, texture and character of its traditional form, creating a striking focal point within a collected interior.
